Radiation safety for NSW dental practices
Since 1 September 2026, every NSW dental practice with X-ray apparatus must have a Radiation Management Plan in place as a condition of its licence. Meeting that condition comes down to three things: the documents that set out how radiation risks are managed, a team trained on those documents and the risks they manage, and confidence that anyone who presses the button is legally able to.

Dental Radiation Safety Training (NSW)
The plan works when the team knows what it says. This online training takes every team member who works in or around the clinical area through the practice’s own Radiation Management Plan and Quality Assurance Program, so the whole team applies the same approach and each person has a record of their induction.
$99 a year for the practice. You receive one permanent link. Put it in your induction kit and every new starter completes the training in their first week, with no seats to buy and no limit on numbers. Renewing each year keeps the link live for the team you have and the team you hire.
Who has to do the training?
Every team member who works in or around the clinical area, whether or not they take X-rays. The plan describes how radiation risks are managed in the practice and everyone working near the apparatus needs to know it. Practices run the training at induction and repeat it each year.
Does the training let a dental assistant take X-rays?
The certificate records induction on the practice’s plan. The qualification to take X-rays in NSW is a separate matter, set out in what training a dental assistant needs to take X-rays in NSW.
What is the IA24 licence and do we need one?
IA24 is the EPA user licence condition for cone beam CT. Practitioners and dental assistants who operate CBCT apparatus need it. Intraoral, OPG and lateral ceph imaging by registered practitioners, and by dental assistants who meet the exemption criteria, is covered without a user licence. The kit and the training address the plan and the team, and are separate from user licensing.
What goes in the register?
The apparatus level Radiation Regulated Material number from the top of each block on your licence, one per unit, with the serial number, the room and the expiry of the Consulting Radiation Expert certificate. The component numbers listed underneath each block stay on the licence and certificate.
What happens at renewal?
The training link is live for twelve months from purchase. Niche Dental sends a reminder before the renewal date and payment keeps the same link working, so the induction kit never changes. Without renewal the link stops and new starters cannot enrol.
