The new AS5369 Standard requires practice teams to document process information in a steriliser log each and every time the steriliser is turned on. This is in addition to cycle data that usually captured and saved automatically by the steriliser on a USB. Keeping a log is nothing new. The old AS/NZS 4185 also required process information to be documented in a steriliser log.
You might find that your steriliser helps you to 'document' or retain information that your team directly inputs into the steriliser. This is great. We still need to check that what the steriliser asks for, is what we need to be documenting. Don't leave this 'to fate'.
Here's a list of what AS5369 says that should be included in your sterilisation log:
Date of sterilisation
Cycle number
Steriliser ID if applicable
Identification of the RMD/other device (e.g. restorative/exam kit)
The number of these items within the load.
ID of the competent person accountable for loading the steriliser
Results of any tests
Results of indicators
Documented evidence of attainment of process parameters
Who released the load
Noting what happened if a device didn’t pass
I have recorded a video showing you how to complete a steriliser log. You can download the Excel sheet shown in the video below. You can use this video to check your steriliser asks you for all the information required, or perhaps you use this video to update your existing log. It is likely it will be simpler.
